Today is the landing screen now, and Enter finally saves
Jot 0.3.0 opens on the day instead of an archive, lets you recall today's todos without leaving the capture box, and fixes the one thing that could quietly lose a capture.
Capture was always the easy half. The thought arrives, you press the key, you type it, it is on disk. The hard half is the other direction: getting the thing back at the moment it is useful, without turning a quick-capture tool into a place you go to browse. 0.3.0 is about that half.
Opening on the day, not the archive
Until now the app window opened on Notes: a reverse-chronological list of everything you had ever jotted. It answered “what did I write down” and nothing else. The first thing you actually want in the morning is narrower than that: what is overdue, what is due today, and what did I capture that I have not done anything with yet.
So that is the new landing screen. Today is the Coming up timeline scoped to a single day and made something you can act on: tick a todo done in place, push it with a Today / Tomorrow / +1h chip without opening anything, and turn a morning note into a todo where it sits. Notes keep their clay dot, todos keep their box, so the two never blur into one undifferentiated feed.
Recall without leaving the box
The capture overlay grew one optional move. Press Ctrl+Down and it shows today’s todos and the last thing you captured, ticked off in place, then folds away again. It is deliberately collapsed by default, because the risk with a feature like this is obvious: the box exists so you never have to go browsing, and a panel that invites browsing would undo the whole point. It stays a peek, the caret never leaves the input, and typing something you have already jotted says so in one warm line before you save it twice.
Enter saves now
This is the fix that matters most. The overlay used to stage captures: Enter added a line to a pending list, and only Ctrl+Enter wrote the batch to disk. That was tidy in theory and a trap in practice. Press Enter, press Escape, and the todos you thought you had saved were gone, because staged is not saved.
Enter now writes the capture the instant you press it, and leaves the box open for the next one. The toast confirms it, the field clears, and Escape can no longer lose anything, because there is nothing left un-saved to lose. Ctrl+Enter still exists; it just means “save this one and close.” A capture is real the moment you commit it, which is what it always should have been.
There is also a small Open Jot control in the overlay, for the times the peek is not enough and you want the full window.
Same two accents, same warm ground, same one key. A little more of the second half of the job.
Jot is a quick-capture app for Windows: one hotkey, one line, back to what you were doing. What it is, or what is still unproven.
